My Two Peace Dolls "Shalom" and "Salaam"

17-23.07.06
I like making all kind of doll,so I had also to try to make some with Tunisan tecnique. I started my work while I read about "Peace Dolls" to make as a sign for Peace in the Middle East (July 2006). That's why I call them "Peace Dolls".

Please visit Noreen's blog. She's got the idea about the "Peace-Dolls".

My first doll - "SHALOM"

You need:

a hook n. 5
yarn in different colours (as you like)

Stitches: TSS, TKS, TPS, clusters

Leg:
make a BR with 11 cn and the colour for the shoe.
Purl 3 rows, change colour (as in photo: the last two loops before the new row, must be closed with the new colour)

Go on with the colour for the socks, work in TSS for 4 rows. Here you must finish the last row with this colour because you must make a turn-up (turn down!) on the socks!
Do so: bend the last row towards you, pick 11 loops up from the 3rd row with the skin-colour, and go on in TKS for 10 rows.

Change colour and make two rows in TSS with the colour for the underpants.

Make the second leg.

Body: continue with the underpants adding the two legs, but increasing 2 stitches between the legs (make a new loop between two strands). Make 8 rows (TSS), change to the colour for the dress/jumper. Work 2 TSS and 2 TKS for 12 rows.
Change to skin-colour and go on with TKS for 11 rows. Then go on with TSS.  Crochet the first row normally, the second row: from left to right: YO and pull through 3 loops (first ch-loop, 2 strands). Next row: insert in space between the clusters, YO and pull up loop, insert in top of cluster, YO and pull up loop; from left to right: YO and pull through 3 loops. Cut yarn.

Here you can see how I finish the head.
Normally I  fill my puppets with stuff from the "last hole", but my stuff is like a disk, so I cut it a littke bit larger than the body.
Split the stuff for the legs.
Roll and fix the stuff with some pins.
Try to close the doll. Take off some sutff if it seems  too thick or put in more if necessary.

Do the same with the arms

Form the doll and fix with pins.
Sew the backside of the doll.
With a tread (skin-colour) twist around the neck and tie tightly.

Sew together as you see in photo.
Arm:
make a BR with 4 ch.
Go on with alternating 1 TSS and 1 TKS.
After BR and 1 pattern-row, on the next two rows: increase 1 stitch in the beginning and 1 in the end of the next row.
Make 6 rows, change to skin-colour and make two rows in TKS. On the next row (from left to right) close as to head.
Cut yarn and make the second arm.
Stick the arms on the dol with pins.

Sew when they fit as you like.

Ear: Make a little BR with 4-5 stitches,

Close loops as in photo.

Straight hair with TSS (purl if you want curly hair).
Make a BR with 20 cn anf work TSS straight on as long as you want the hair (measue on th doll)
Then decrease centre-back: take up 8 loops, then insert hook under the next two strands, YO and pul up. Do this twice, end row normally, turna back. Decrease in this way once again, then decrease only once on two rows (14 loops o hook). Cut yarn. Sew and make a fringe on front of the hair with 7-8-9 loops as you like.
Pin the hair on the doll to fix as you like.

Skirt: make a BR with 40 ch.
Then go on making clusters in this way:
(a) insert hook under first strand, YO, pull up loop, repeat to end of row,
from left to right: YO, through first loop, *YO, through 4 loops, 2 cn*, repeat *-* till the end of row.
(b) Next row: *insert hook under the 2 cn,YO, pull up loop, insert hook in ch, YO, pull up loop, insert hook in top of cluster, YO, pull up loop*, repeat from * - *
Make two rows (a & b) like this.
(c) Then: *insert hook under cn, YO, pull up loop, insert hook in top of cluster*. repeat * - * to end of row
from left to right: YO, through first loop, *YO, through 2 loops, 1 cn*, repeat *-* till the end of row.
Make two rows (c) like this.
Then make 3 rows with TSS.
Cut yarn.

As you can see above, the skirt curls!
So turn the skirt and from the backside pick up 40 loops in the BR-chain in order to make a new BR. Then sew the edge......

and the skirt doesn't curl anymore!

I joined the skirt to the doll, or put an elastic around the waits.

If it's a PEACE DOLL then add a heart (felt, crocheted, paper, button enad so on)

The second doll - "SALAAM"

See above how to make the doll, and make him longer.

Here: shoes: 3 rows (purl)
trousers: legs 13 TSS rows  then add the two legs and go on 10 (or 8) rows to finish the rousers
jumper: 12 rows
head: 15 rows TKS, then close as aove.

Belt: BR with 4-5 cn (depends on the yarn) and go on as long as necesary.

This strange shape is the boy-doll's hair!

Make a BR with 10 cn.
Use TPS (purl to get curly hair) an work 3 rows.
Increase 1 stitch in beginning and in end of next row Repeat 4 times (= 20 loops)
2-3 rows with 20 stitches.
Decrease 1 stitch in beginning, in the middle and ind the end of next 2 rows.
Go on decreasing only in int beginning and in the end of newt rows until 8 stitches.

Pin the shape on the head. You may add some stuff if you want. Form as you like and sew.

It's a good idea to embroider the face before adding the hair. In this way you can hide the treads under the hair.

Listening to the news.... hoping to hear about PEACE.....
